Blue Jays Weekly Recap: April 12-18

The Toronto Blue Jays had a back-and-forth week that saw them go 3-4 against the Yankees and Royals. They began the week by taking two of three against the rival Yankees (who doesn’t love winning a series against the Yankees) but ended up losing three of four against the Royals.

These results might have been a little surprising to some Jays fans, as many would think if the Jays were to have won a series this week, it would likely have come against the Royals. Instead, the Jays excited fans against the Yankees and left many wondering if they left wins on the table against Kansas City.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the most important notes from the past week.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Once again, we have to talk about Guerrero Jr. because he’s just playing unreal. Batting .389 with four home runs and 11 RBI’s and an OPS of 1.174.

He is currently leading the team in RBI’s, OBP, SLG, OPS, and BB. He has been the catalyst of the Jays offence so far this season and is showing no signs of slowing down.

This is the Vladimir Guerrero Jr. the Blue Jays have been waiting for.

Bo Bichette walks it off

Bichette has two career walk-offs in his career, and both have come against the Yankees. Not a bad team to be known for being clutch against in we are being honest.

Bichette turned on a pitch and sent it over the wall in right field to give the Jays a 5-4 victory against the Yankees on Wednesday afternoon. He’s tied with Guerrero Jr. for the team lead with four home runs leads the team with three stolen bases.

Cavan Biggio

Honestly, Biggio hasn’t gotten off to the start he would have wanted offensively so far this season. Batting just .171, the Jays need more from their third baseman.

He has two RBI’s this season that came off of two solo home runs. He needs to find a way to bring home runners on base when he is up to bat. Biggio has always been known as a very selective hitter, but with six BB and 16 strikeouts so far this season, his approach at the plate might need to change a little bit.

Steven Matz

Matz has been the Jays best pitcher so far this season, owning a 3-0 record through his first three starts. With an ERA of 1.47 and a WHIP of 0.82, Matz looks like he has put last season way behind him and is possibly set for a monster season.

He’s allowed one run in each of his first three games and was carrying a no-hitter into the 6th inning in the first game of their doubleheader on Saturday before surrendering two hits. With all the injuries to the Blue jays pitching staff so far this season, Matz’s play is proving to be extremely valuable up to this point.

The Upcoming Week

The Blue Jays have an off day on Monday before playing two games at Fenway against the Red Sox. Thursday is yet another day off while they head down to Florida to face off against the Rays in the three-game series beginning Friday.
