Blue Jays Weekly Recap: May 31 – June 6

The Toronto Blue Jays had another above .500 week, going 3-2 in five games split between the Miami Marlins and the Houston Astros. The Blue Jays were able to sweep the Marlins in their two-game series, outscoring them 11-6. However, they could only win one of three against the Astros, including a horrific 13-1 blowout loss on Friday night.

Thankfully, that one game didn’t seem to rattle the team too much, as they rebounded nicely for a 6-2 victory on Saturday. With all that being said, let’s look at the major storylines from the past week.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

We simply can’t stop talking about Vlad; he’s just been so good this season. During the past five games, he is hitting .444 with two home runs and five RBI’s, including a triple on Wednesday against the Marlins.

Here’s something crazy to think about; Eddie Matthews holds the record for most home runs in an age-22 season with 47. At the moment, Vlad is on pace for 52 home runs, which would break the record set by Matthews.

Alex Manoah

For as good as Manoah was in his MLB debut, we have to remember that this is an extremely young pitcher just getting a taste of the big league. His second career start, which came on Wednesday against the Marlins, was one he would like to forget.

In 3 and 1/3 innings, Manoah allowed four earned runs and three home runs. He struck out five while walking three in a performance that looked nothing like his first. His command was off, and he was leaving pitches over the plate too much. There is nothing to panic over, though; this is an extremely young pitcher who needs to learn from these starts to be better in the future.

George Springer

Springer hasn’t played a game since May 2nd, as the star centerfielder is still recovering from a quad injury. However, this weekend Springer was seen doing some baserunning drills, which is extremely encouraging.

It seems like Springer isn’t too far off from a rehab start in the minors. Once he gets in a game or two down in the minors and feels good, Springer will be a welcomed addition to a team that is already lethal offensively. The Jays will be getting a significant upgrade to their biggest strength, which is scoring runs.

Looking ahead

This upcoming week the Blue Jays are back on the road for matchups against two of the top teams in the league. First, they have a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox starting Tuesday. They then travel to Fenway to face the Boston Red Sox for a four-game set beginning Friday.
