The Toronto Blue Jays have signed free-agent pitcher Tyler Chatwood to a one-year contract

Chatwood, who is 31 years of age, has played for the Chicago Cubs in the previous three seasons. Despite him being a starter last season (only playing in five games but starting all five), it looks like the Blue Jays will plan to use him out of the bullpen.

He was last primarily used out of the bullpen in 2019 when he had a 3.76 ERA in 72.2 innings pitched.

Chatwood has some effective pitches but struggles at times to control his location. For his career, Chatwood has a career walks per nine rate of 4.7.

The right-handed throwing pitcher has some power behind his fastball. He hit 98-99 mph with his fastball at times during the 2019 season when he was being used primarily as a reliever (per Ian Hunter)

With the acquisition of Chatwood, the Jays add another reliable arm in their bullpen. It might not be the flashiest signing in the world, but you can never have enough quality pitchers on your roster.

After recently missing out on some impact players, the Jays have finally dipped their toe into the free-agent market. We will soon find out if this was just an appetizer to an even more significant signing.
